What is 5-MeO-DMT

A short, potent tryptamine that occurs in plants, in one North American toad, and in laboratories. It is often grouped with the classic psychedelics, and it behaves quite differently from them.

The molecule

5-MeO-DMT is 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine. In clinical literature it increasingly appears under the name mebufotenin. It is a tryptamine, which puts it in the same broad chemical family as psilocybin, N,N-DMT, and serotonin itself. The methoxy group at the 5 position is the small structural difference that changes almost everything about how it behaves in the body.

It is active in very small quantities and, when vaporised, it acts within seconds. The whole experience is usually over inside half an hour. That compression is one of its defining features and one of its risks.

Where it occurs

5-MeO-DMT is genuinely widespread in nature. It appears in the seeds of Anadenanthera peregrina and Anadenanthera colubrina, the source of the yopo and vilca snuffs used for centuries in parts of South America and the Caribbean. It appears in several Virola species, in some Phalaris grasses, and in a scattering of other plants.

It also appears in the parotoid gland secretion of Incilius alvarius, still widely called Bufo alvarius, the Sonoran Desert toad. That single animal is responsible for most of the popular imagery around the subject, and for most of the ethical problems. We give it its own page.

And it is made synthetically. Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT is a single, characterisable compound that can be assayed for purity. Toad secretion is a mixture, which matters more than most people realise.

Why it is not interchangeable with DMT

The two are constantly conflated, including by people who should know better. N,N-DMT is famous for vivid visual content: geometry, entities, landscapes, a sense of having gone somewhere and met something. 5-MeO-DMT typically produces very little of that. Reports describe the collapse of the sense of being a separate self, often with no imagery at all. People frequently cannot say afterwards what happened, because the structure that normally records what happens was not operating.

This difference has practical consequences. It is harder to prepare someone for an experience that cannot be described in advance. It is harder to obtain meaningful informed consent. And the aftermath tends to be less about interpreting content and more about reassembling an ordinary sense of self, which can take considerably longer than the half hour the acute effects last.

The forms it is encountered in

Outside a laboratory it is generally encountered either as synthetic material or as dried toad secretion. The two are not equivalent. Toad secretion contains 5-MeO-DMT alongside bufotenine and other compounds in proportions that vary between animals, seasons, and locations. Nobody holding a sample of dried secretion knows what is in it without testing it, and almost nobody tests it.

Clinical research has largely moved to synthetic material, delivered by inhalation or intranasally, precisely because the dose can be known and repeated. See the state of the research.

Why people seek it out

Survey and naturalistic data point in a consistent direction. People report large, durable shifts in how they relate to death, to grief, and to a persistent sense of separateness. Some report relief from depression and anxiety that has outlasted other interventions. Others report nothing much, and a minority report a period of real destabilisation afterwards.

All of that comes from small studies, self-selected samples, and people who chose to answer a questionnaire. It is worth taking seriously. It is not the same as evidence of safety or efficacy, and we try not to blur the two.

Serotonergic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, cardiovascular conditions, and a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder all change the risk picture significantly. Read risk, contraindications, screening before you read anything else here.

What this page is not

This is an educational overview. It contains no instructions, no quantities, and no protocol. 5-MeO-DMT is a controlled substance in most countries, including the United States. Nothing here is medical or legal advice, and nothing here should be read as encouragement to obtain or use it.
